THE MODEL
Learning how to learn.
This is what replaces the syllabus. Not a shorter list of things to memorise, but a different account of what learning is, and the reason the record it produces can be trusted.
01
Facts were the point when facts were scarce.
A curriculum is a list of things worth carrying in your head, drawn up in a century when carrying them in your head was the only option. Every one of those facts is now a sentence away, retrieved faster and more accurately than any of us could manage. What is not a sentence away is knowing which question to ask. Noticing when the answer is wrong. Staying with something hard for four months. Explaining it so somebody else genuinely follows. Those do not date, and nobody is examined on them.
The facts stopped being the scarce thing. We kept examining them anyway.
02
One afternoon, read properly.
A child decides to plan a week in Lisbon. They work out what it costs and what that is in another currency. They practise a language they half speak. They find out why the city looks the way it does, which turns out to be an earthquake in 1755. They negotiate with a parent over what is actually affordable, and they build a plan that survives contact with reality.
A timetable records that as nothing. It happened on a Tuesday and there was no lesson. Read properly it is five subjects, a dozen skills, and evidence against eight or nine of the twenty five tenets, from one afternoon nobody assigned.
So every moment gets read the same way
- What happenedIn their words, with anything they made or photographed attached.
- Which subjects it touchedAll of them, not the nearest one.
- Which skills were shownNamed as demonstrated, never ticked off a list.
- Which tenets appearedThe twenty five, each read on its own evidence.
- Which identities are still heldI'm not good at geography, said in passing on the way to something else. Noticed, kept, never said back to them.
03
Skills are not a checklist. They accumulate.
There is no fixed list of skills to acquire, because nobody can write one that survives a decade. The set is alive. Skills get named as they are actually demonstrated, and the collection grows and reorganises itself for as long as the child does. Each one links down to the tenets underneath it, so you can see what a skill is really made of rather than just that it happened.
A skill gains weight every time it is used, fades when it goes quiet, and never falls to zero.
Nothing a person has done is ever fully gone. So when something dormant comes back years later, the moment it returns is linked to the moment it started. That link is the evidence that depth assembles across years rather than within a term, and it is the part a test taken in June can never show you.
04
Nothing arrives one subject at a time.
Knowledge was split into subjects because thirty children and one clock require it, not because knowledge comes that way. Here a single activity is read across every subject it genuinely touched, and the crossings are the point rather than an accident. Over years, the pattern of what keeps crossing into what is one of the most revealing things in the whole record: it is the shape of how this particular person thinks.
- Communication & Language
- Mathematics & Financial Thinking
- Science & Understanding Reality
- History, Culture & Society
- Self-Sufficiency & Life Skills
- Creative Arts & Expression
- Entrepreneurship & Value Creation
- Conscious Development
- Adventure & Experience
Nine areas, deliberately broad, and extensible. A new one gets added when a child's actual life demands it, not when a committee approves it.
05
There is no behind.
Behind assumes one road at one speed. Real learning loops. Something gets dropped, returned to two years later with better equipment, and only then understood. An interest goes quiet and reactivates. A project fails and teaches more than the one that worked. None of that is legible to a system built to measure progress along a line, and all of it is legible here, because growth is described against the child's own past and never against a destination.
No goal value. No next level. No progress-to-mastery bar.
06
Depth, so that wide never means shallow.
The fair objection to all of this is that a child could touch everything and understand nothing. So depth is tracked separately from breadth. Something counts as understood when they have explained it themselves, unprompted, more than once, on separate days, and it moves along a path you can see: encountered, explained, applied, connected, teaching someone else. That is a harder bar than an exam, and unlike an exam it cannot be crammed or forgotten by Friday.
07
A project carries the whole arc.
Projects are where the tenets meet real constraints. Every one runs the same nine phases, so the boring parts nobody volunteers for get lived through rather than skipped.
A project is successful when growth occurred, regardless of whether the thing worked.

THE TWENTY FIVE
What is actually being watched.
These are the tenets the whole record is built from. They are grouped below only so that twenty five things can be read on one page. The system itself holds them flat: no tenet is ever inferred from another, and where two overlap that overlap is discovered from real evidence rather than assumed.
Grouping is a reading aid. The system holds all 25 flat.
How they meet the world
What pulls them out into it, and what they do when they get there.
- Curiosity
Their own wondering, pulling them somewhere.
They generate their own next question, follow a tangent and find their way back, or return to the same subject across days. Not a question asked to please the adult in the room.
- Exploration
Going where the outcome is not guaranteed.
They investigate, experiment, wander into the unknown, try the thing that might not work. Completing a task with a known answer is not this.
- Transfer
Carrying something into a place it was never taught.
This is like when we did the other thing. They apply what they learned somewhere else entirely, without anyone drawing the line for them.
- Connections
Seeing that two things are the same thing.
They link ideas across subjects and experiences unprompted, spot the pattern between two unrelated things, synthesise. A connection pointed out to them does not count.
- Creativity
Making something new to them.
They combine ideas in a way that is original to them, or imagine the alternative. It has to originate with them, not with a model they were shown or an idea they were seeded.
How they think
The machinery underneath an opinion, and the honesty to change one.
- Critical Thinking
Telling a guess from a fact.
They ask how anyone knows, build a counter-case, or change their mind when better information arrives. Not reflexive hedging, and not disagreeing for the taste of it.
- Problem Solving
Staying with the thing that does not work yet.
They define the problem, try something, adapt when it fails, break it into parts, and reach a solution by their own reasoning rather than being handed the method.
- Articulation
Ordering it so someone else can follow.
First this, then because of that. They repair their own wording toward precision, or teach something well enough that the listener genuinely gets it. Length is not the measure.
- Reflection
Looking at their own thinking.
What they learned, what surprised them, what they would do differently. A flat recap of the day is not reflection, however detailed it is.
- Integration
The moment it becomes theirs.
So now I get that. Experience turning into durable understanding, pieces woven into a whole. This is the one that separates learning from remembering facts.
- Media Literacy
Noticing the nudge.
They question a source, spot the persuasion or the algorithm working on them, separate the story from the fact. Possibly the most load-bearing skill of their generation.
- Perceptual Intelligence
Separating what happened from what it meant.
They notice they are assuming, or comparing, or that something could be read more than one way. Maybe it just looked that way. The deepest one, and the one everything else rests on.
How they act
What happens when it stops being an idea and starts costing something.
- Agency
Shaping the situation instead of waiting inside it.
They take ownership, decide, and act. Doing as they are told, even excellently, is compliance. This is the other thing.
- Self-Direction
Choosing their own next step.
They set a goal, pick the way in, organise their own approach. Following instructions beautifully is a different thing, and we do not confuse the two.
- Accountability
Owning the choice and what followed.
They acknowledge their part without being cornered into it, and follow through on what they said they would do. Shame is a different thing and is never mistaken for this.
- Resilience
Coming back without it becoming about their worth.
They re-attempt differently after a setback, or reframe a failure as information: so that is why it did not work. Not mechanical repetition, and not a cheerful I'll keep trying with no return.
- Participation
Showing up for something larger than themselves.
They contribute to a group, a community, a shared effort. Attendance without contribution does not count, and contribution without recognition still does.
- Collaboration
Working with, not merely near.
Sharing, dividing, listening, building on what someone else offered, working through the friction of it. Solo work happening in the same room is not collaboration.
- Discussion
Genuinely meeting another mind.
They engage with a view that is not theirs, build on it or challenge it with care, ask the other person a real question. Talking at length is not discussing.
- Expression
Putting something of themselves out.
An idea, a feeling, a made thing, where the expressing itself is the whole point. We never judge the quality of the output. That is not what this is for.
How they are
The conditions everything else runs on, and the ones school never looked at.
- Capacity
How much room they have today.
Their available bandwidth right now, which moves constantly. Never their ability. This is timing information, gathered so the day can adapt to them, and it is never a judgement.
- Regulation
Noticing a state and finding the way back.
They pause, breathe, name a feeling, recover their composure. Dysregulation is never pathologised, and its absence is never counted against them.
- Embodiment
Knowing things in the body.
Noticing what their body is doing, settling through movement or breath, learning by making and doing rather than only by talking about it.
- Health
Awareness of what their body needs.
Sleep, food, movement, rest, the state of their nervous system. We observe awareness, never compliance, and we never moralise about food or bodies.
- Relational Intelligence
Reading the room, and the person in it.
Empathy, holding or respecting a boundary, compassion, repairing something after it broke. Politeness without awareness is not this.
The engine, if you want it.
Everything above is enforced by a system that is built in the open: how signals are extracted, why no number can ever reach a child, and how the record stays replayable and exportable. project-h.co
